Fuscidea elixii Kantvilas
     
  Fl. Australia 56A: 209 (2004). T: c. 1 km W of Mt Banda Banda, N.S.W., alt. 1050 m, on canopy twigs of Nothofagus moorei in rainforest, 6 July 1988, G.Kantvilas 486/88; holo: HO; iso: NSW.  
     
  Thallus pale brown, developing a pinkish brown tinge with age, composed of irregular convex contiguous to somewhat dispersed areoles 0.25–0.50 mm wide, 140–300 µm thick, forming irregular patches to c. 3 cm wide, esorediate, delimited by a diffuse blackish marginal prothallus 0.5–1.0 mm wide; photobiont cells ±roundish, 8–15 µm wide; medulla K+ pale yellow, I–. Apothecia scattered, sessile, constricted at the base, roundish or irregularly lobed, 0.2–1.0 mm wide, 180–320 µm thick; disc plane, undulate to convex in the oldest apothecia, dark brown to black, epruinose; margin persistent, concolorous with the disc or rarely a little paler, sometimes flexuous, ±level with or extending slightly above the disc. Excipulum in section 20–30 (–50) µm thick, pale yellow-brown ±throughout, K+ pale yellowish. Hypothecium hyaline to pale brownish, I–, K+ pale yellow, 90–160 µm thick, not inspersed with oil droplets. Hymenium hyaline, not markedly inspersed with oil droplets, I+ deep blue, 50–70 µm thick, with a pale yellowish brown epihymenial zone 5–10 µm thick, composed of the pigmented upper portions of the paraphyses, unchanged to ±olive in KOH. Paraphyses 1.5–2.0 µm thick, simple to occasionally branched and anastomosing, especially at the base, with apices expanded to 3–5 µm and pigmented olive-brown. Asci 35–55 × 8–14 µm. Ascospores simple, very rarely 1-septate, colourless, mostly markedly curved and bean-shaped, more rarely ellipsoidal or ±sigmoid, 10–14 × 3–5 µm. Pycnidia not observed. CHEMISTRY: Thallus K+ yellowish, C+ orange, KC+ orange, Pd+ orange-red, UV+ weakly dull orange; containing alectorialic acid (major), barbatolic acid (minor), hypoalectorialic acid (minor), subalectorialic acid (minor), haematommic acid (minor) and 5,7-dihydroxy-6-methylphthalide (minor).
     
  Endemic to eastern N.S.W.; occurs on the twigs of trees and shrubs in wet forest.
